Project: “Container City”

Executive summary: The new “container city” in Tauranga, known as Our Place Tauranga, is a food, entertainment and social hub made up of more than 30 containers that vendors have fitted out and made their own.

The challenge
The challenge was to enliven and revitalise the inner city by transforming the area into an eating and shopping destination with the main aim of creating an entertainment-meets-community space. Tenants include cafes and retail stores that needed their own spaces to operate out of. The Our Place Tauranga site is also earmarked for future development so the structure needed to be portable.
The solution
Royal Wolf worked with Little Big Events and Tauranga City Council to create a functional, yet stylish infrastructure made up of more than 30 containers. The containers, made up of a range of openside, hoardings and standard containers, were easily adapted enabling each tenant to modify the spaces to suit their specific needs.
The result
A “Container City” was created to provide the community with an entertainment hub where local hospitality and retail outlets can showcase their products and work in a social environment. As well as its regular weekly offerings, Our Place also plays host to large scale events such as the Tauranga Coffee Festival. This highly unique space has helped reinvigorate the central city and it allows businesses to connect with others in the community in a social environment that is a blue print for the way Tauranga will grow in the future.
